JAI 417 Just add T for tri-shutter card

There are lots of T's I could have chosen including Tina herself, but I decided to make a tri-shutter card for a special friend who's celebrating a milestone birthday.

The birthday girl is a huge Disney fan so of course her card had to be Disney themed. I'd loved this centre step card I made for another fan (coincidentally also for a JAI letter challenge), so I used some of the same elements here.

Tri-shutters are the perfect card for a special occasion, & have been one of my fave fancy folds since trying one waaaaay back in 2009. (You can see all my past tri-shutters cards here).

 While I hadn't forgotten how to make them, I did forget they can be tricky to photograph - especially when you're running late with your post & the light's not great, so forgive my partially fuzzy image above.

If you haven't seen a tri-shutter card before, they look sort of like a regular card when closed & fit a regular envelope.

When it's open, the layers fold alternately & it looks like the first full pic in the post. Pull it open a bit more & you can see all three panels like this.

Disney-fying the card started with some retired dotty red and white paper. The new Regals 6x6 paper pack would be a great substitute for this.

My Minnie ears are circles of retired black glimmer paper (oh I hope this comes back) cut from the Stitched Shapes dies set , and a paper bow made with the retired bow builder punch. I of course had to use my favourite Celebrate You die.

The stamped sentiments are from Happy Birthday, Gorgeous. You can see the structure better when the card's flat.

Tri Shutter Card Template

The basic tri shutter card base looks complex but it's really just 4 score lines, 2 cuts & some folding. I've put together this template to show you how it should look. This version is for a regular card size that fits a normal C6 envelope.

My measurements using A4 cardstock and cm's:
- Makes a  9 x 15cm front that fits a standard C6 envelope.
- Cut card base: 27cm x 15cm
- Score the long side at 4.5cm, 9cm, 18cm & 22.5cm.
- Cut slits - 4.5cm in from each side, between 4.5cm and 22.5cm score lines.

I know many visitors use inches so try these alternatives below. Play around to create your own look.

Using 8-1/2 x 11 inch card (& inches):
- Makes a 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inch card front
- Cut card base: 5-1/2 x 10-1/2
- Score at: 1-3/4, 3-1/2, 7, 8-3/4 inches
- Cut slits - 1-3/4 in from each side, between 1-3/4 and 8-3/4 inch score lines.

Using 12 inch card (& inches):
- Makes a front 4 x 5-1/2 inches- Cut card base: 5-1/2 x 12
- Score at: 2,4,8,10 inches
- Cut slits - 1-3/4 in from each side, between 2 and 10 inch score lines.

You can easily adjust the size by changing the height to make it taller, and/or change the proportions of the top, middle or bottom pieces to give a different look. See my past tri-shutters cards here.
