JAI515 Just add mixed media - Prized Peony for a friend

Hello hello! I'm back with my card project for this week's new Just Add Ink challenge - Just Add Mixed Media.

Mixed media gave me thoughts of collages, layers of paint, papers and texture so I checked for a definition and found that it "generally describes artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials". OK. Now how to interpret that for me and my fairly clean style.

I'm still loving peonies so the Peony Garden suite came out again, including the Prized Peonies stamp set and bundle and I created this card.

Can you believe the only cardstock on the whole card is Whisper White? I created a dimensional background from a stamped and coloured panel. to start, I stamped the single peony image in basic gray ink on Whisper White card, then coloured the negative space around the flowers and the flower centres with with Light Pool Party and Petal Pink Stampin Blends markers, leaving the flower petals white. The peony image has so much beautiful shading to create depth that you don't need to do much.
I then cut the card into irregular strips and adhered each strip onto another panel of Whisper White card, leaving a small border around each piece. Once I'd adhered all the pieces, I cut the piece again in the opposite direction and adhered the pieces onto another piece of white card. The resulting piece has lots of depth and is very tactile. To accentuate the cut look more, I layered more Pool Party Stampin Blend to selected pieces for more interest.

I cut down the panel to fit a standard Thick Whisper White card base with a small border around the front. Two rows of Gray Granite shimmer ribbon helped accentuate the lines in the piece.

I stamped another peony flower and watercoloured it with Petal Pink & Calypso Coral ink pads using Water Painters, then I colored some leaves with Stampin Blends markers in Just Jade, Mint Macaron and Soft Sea Foam. I also added quite a lot of Clear Wink of Stella for shimmer which you sadly can't see in my pics.

To help the flower pop off the base I mounted it with Dimensionals, off centre on a stitched circle (Stitched Shapes dies) which I embossed with the Dainty Diamonds 3D embossing folder to add more texture.

Some Elegant Faceted Gems from the Peony Garden suite and silver thread (retired) finished off the mixed media elements.

Inside, another simple peony and some lines to reflect the irregular background.

So that's my take on the challenge. Head to the Just Add Ink blog to see all our Design Team projects. I hope you'll mix it up for this challenge too.

Thanks for visiting today. See all my Prized Peony cards here  and read on below for more info about the suite and to get all the supplies you'll need to make your own peony cards.

Happy stamping & inky wishes,
Di

Super neat trick to creating the mosaic. I had to pop by to see how you did it. Wonderful effect.

WOW! What a great card. I think I understood how you did it, until I read the part where you "turned it around on another piece"... my brain is not seeing that. But, I'll certainly give this a try, because it's truly beautiful... TFS

Wow, Di - this is outstanding! I was sure you'd cut all the little irregular squares, and painstakingly placed them into that gorgeous pattern. The technique you've used is amazing; never would've thought of it! Such a beautiful card, my friend. x

Thanks very much, Bobbi. The stamped piece is cut up into strips and attached to a second piece of card. This piece is cut again into strips (to give the little ‘square shapes’ and attached to a third piece of card.
Hope you’ll try it.

Thanks so much, Christine. Oh definitely wouldn’t be doing it in tiny pieces. Eeep!
Sending big hugs, Di 💗
